Journal Two- Olivia Mullins

Hello my name is Olivia Mullins. I  was born and raised in Akron, OH.  A fun fact about me is before my freshman of college year I was the only African American girl to graduate from my high school meaning that I didn't not have that many friends who looked like myself. This past semester has been the best experience of my life I now have eight friends who are all from Africa. Seven of them are originally from Ghana and they are now teaching me how to speck their native language, and my other friend who is also my roommate is from Cameroon and she speaks fluent French. These people having become family to me.

Senior Prom 2017

In the book Holding On my favorite of the three profiles would be "Steam Train" a theme that stood out to me is the difference between hobos and bums. That hobo were presented higher up than a bum. Also how hobos have communities. This was important because in this society now I would of thought that a hobo and a um were the same thing, but described in the text a hobo will protect you and be there for you but a bum would steal your money and beat you up. a question I would have is why would husbands pay hobos to do their work?

  1. How many languages do you know? I also thought that hobos and bums were the same until learning the distinctions.

  2. I agree with the theme you chose, I didn't know the difference until reading this book and it is very eye opening to see how people portray hobos and bums.

  3. An answer to your question at the end, perhaps the families they worked for were glad to be helping a community that helps them. A home cooked meal is a small price to pay for the feelings of repayment and gratitude towards they who worked so hard for them.

  4. Olivia you looked good at prom!!! I think the point of the differentiation between bums and hoboes was a big deal to me because I had no idea that was even a thing. Hoboes being described as cleaner ad neater and more "family-like" and then bums being described as the polar opposite- which is something that the hoboes really did not appreciate because people who are not bums or hoboes don;t know the difference and just assume that they are all one. Either way, I enjoyed this profile a lot.
