Journal 2 - Jarrod

Hey everyone! My name is Jarrod Mautz. I'm a senior here at OSU, majoring in financial mathematics (no I don't want to be a teacher lol). So as implied by my major I essentially want to work on wall street. I guess a fun fact about me is that I can make a weird noise with my ears. Also, I was born in Delaware Ohio, but was raised in Northern Virginia about 10 minutes from Washington DC.

The profile that drew my attention the most from the reading was that of Robert Shields. I think the major theme I pulled from his reading was Obsession. While reading about his routines I couldn't help but wonder how much more advanced our species would become if everyone found a productive obsession and was able to remain as assiduous to it as Robert. Conversely, I think some big problems arise from being obsessed with something, such as dullness and or indifference to others. As people become engulfed in their obsessions they can't truly care for much else as multiple other draws to your attention can begin to become distractions towards your pursuit. However I do believe that to achieve a goal you have to at least be mildly obsessed with obtaining it (no matter how temporary or small it is). This is especially true now during the age of technology where multiple distractions and copious amounts of knowledge is at our disposal.

"What would it do to you if you just stopped?"
"It would be like turning off my life."

"... it takes me almost a day to catch up with my notes. So I avoid going out. I avoid being away..."

"How does your family feel about this?"
"Never asked them."

I feel all of these show Robert's indifference towards others when it pertains to his obsession and his feelings towards it.

Do you agree that to obtain a goal obsession is required, no matter how temporal it may have been?

  1. I also pulled "obsession" as the main theme from Shields' profile. In response to the question, I believe that obsession is required to obtain a goal but only if the goal is substantial. I believe small goals can be achieved with any level of dedication. They would just take more time with less dedication. However, I believe significant goals do require a kind of obsession to complete.

  2. Jarrod, I really liked reading your post. I agree that obsession is the theme of Robert shields post and I enjoyed reading how you interpreted his profile. To answer your question, I do believe that obsession is only sometimes required in achieving a goal. You don't always have to have obsession to achieve a goal but I do agree that in some cases you do, a lot of times with more challenging goals.

  3. Jarrod, I agree with your statement that to obtain a goal obsession is required. Everyone should be obsessed with the goals they set in order to achieve them to the best that they can.

  4. I completely agree that obsession can cause negative effects. Take any kind of addiction for example, addiction and obsession are borderline synonymous. This man forgoes having a life in order to document for hours. That's no way to live.

  5. I believe that there needs to be a balance between obsession and reality. I don't think it's healthy to be so engulfed in something that you forget how to function without it.
