Trey Maynard: Journal 9

The Nerdwriter https://www.youtube.com/user/Nerdwriter1

I found Nerdwriter because he made a video about my favorite vlogger, Casey Neistat. The video is entitled "CASEY NEISTAT: WHAT YOU DON'T SEE". It really blew my mind at the amount of work Neistat puts into his videos, and it set me and my best friend down the path of creating videos.

Nerdwriter deals mostly with art and movies, sometimes branching into popular culture. His most viewed video is "HOW DONALD TRUMP ANSWERS A QUESTION" which I like to cite when people talk about Trump having a limited vocabulary and how he sounds like a fifth grader. It's very intentional, evidently, or he is an unsung genius for the way he talks if it's all subconscious.

Nerdwriter releases about one video a month, and is supported on Patreon. Currently, he makes $3,809 whenever he uploads a video, so the channel is his full time job. This doesn't include brand deals or ad revenue, which I'm sure is substantial.

Channels like Nerdwriter's are important because they help tackle the nuances of design, art, and movies, while also putting emphasis on pop-culture. Since his videos are released about once a month (he aims for one every two weeks), all of the videos are very thorough and well made. I stop what I'm doing and watch his video every time I get a notification for one.

His most recent video, "HOW DARK PATTERNS ONLINE TRICK YOU" is extremely interesting because it helps you understand why advertising is so effective and why some apps and websites are designed the way they are.

  1. I really like the insight you gave on his angle and even how much he makes per upload, as I've always wondered how good the compensation gets for some channels. Can you add an image and caption Trey? Thanks for getting us started!

  2. By the way I watched What The Truman Show Teaches Us About Politics and found it astute. I loathe sources that are too partisan and just preach to the choir but was happy to find he has some balanced and nuanced content.

  3. Trey I am really glad that you shared this video about Nerdwriter. I watched the "How Dark Patterns Online Trick You" and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot about that kind of stuff here and Ohio State and I am glad I got to learn even more about it. I do agree that when Nerdwriter releases a video that he has it really well put together and it is very factual. I might have to check this out from time to time.

  4. Nice resource! I watched the "How Dark Patterns Online Trick You" and was fascinated. It's amazing the kinds of things we don't even realize are expertly crafted Dark Patterns until we're told. I recognized a couple Dark Patterns in the video (the email unsubscribe for example) that I've brushed off as being poorly implemented customer service/IT rather than intentionally designed traps.
