A source from the internet that I believe offers a different learning experience is Youth Speaks on youtube. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbQDhzxvT8kGpDdjZT19VQg). I took an oral comm class in High School and it really ignited my passion for poetry, but not just any kind of poetry, spoken word (or commonly refereed to as slam poetry). I'm currently chasing a degree in social work, meaning I want to help people, and to help people you have to know their stories and I believe poetry is an easy way for someone to get their point across. Spoken Words is more of a 21st century take on poetry and really allows you to feel the power and emotion behind the words instead of simply reading them on paper. It also allows you to dive deep into issues you may not know or deal with personally. Maybe you're not getting a collegiate education from listening to poetry but you're getting an education on soul, you're getting a learning opportunity from the experiences of others.
The Spoken Words poem I vaguely remember as being my first would be "Somewhere in America" by Belissa Escobedo, Rhiannon McGavin, and Zariya Allen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OadZpUJv8Eg&t=21s). It popped up on my recommended videos one day on youtube and i've been hooked every since.
Some other great Spoken Word channels include Button Poetry (one of my favorite poets being Blythe Baird), and Get Lit-Words Ignite! Also, another important poem I feel everyone should listen to (and watch as it comes with a video!) is the To This Day project by Shane Koyczan, it really instills how one can learn from the experiences of others through poetry. You can view it below! To This Day-Shane Koyczan
I really enjoyed the video. The power in their voices are moving in being able to see the emotion reflected on their faces. I definitely agree with poetry being an expression that can be very soulful.
