Journal 10 - Jarrod Mautz

To start off, something I agreed with in the book was when he talked about people becoming too reliable on proxies (corporations, govt agencies, etc) for our everyday needs. on page 13 he states "What has happened is that mos people in our country, and apparently most people in the "developed world, have given proxies to the corporations to produce and provide all of their food, clothing, and shelter." He goes on to state, that these proxies also provide other important needs such as, childcare, elderly care, entertainment, education, etc. I definitely agree with these points as I think there are definitely areas where we could become more self sufficient, such as starting a small garden in our backyards to provide our own vegetables.

I disagree however with the quote "We have accepted uncritically the belief that technology is only good; that it cannot serve evil (page 3)." I think this logic is flawed as there have been copious amounts of research, gone into AI and other technologies. As well as talks and books published on the dangers and acceptable and responsible use practices for said technologies.

One thing I have mixed feelings about  is when he states that "human household or economy is in conflict at almost every point with the household of nature (page 12)." The reason I question this is because we as human beings are not separate from nature. Essentially all organisms share the earth. However, I do believe many times corporations do not have the environment in their best interests. Essentially creating a tragedy of the commons scenario. Although, not all humans interact with nature in a wasteful or negative way. One thing to research would be, byproducts or waste of people trying to be more self sufficient vs the average human in an urban environment.
