The photo at the beginning of the Serpent Handler story intrigues the viewer almost instantly. The photo itself is reminiscent of American Gothic, a famous painting. The photo shows a man and his mother, the mother has a solemn look on her face while the man is smiling. There aren't many shadows in the photo, but the lighting helps to show the contrast between the mother and the son. The son is wearing a white shirt that contrasts the black dress of his mother. The photo shows the son holding a cage full of snakes, while the setting is a nondescript barn save for the sign above their heads saying "Church of the Lord Jesus", which could have definitely been designed better. The use of this as the setting obviously implies it's a church, but the addition of the snakes helps to imply it's a religious institution of snake handlers. The tone of the photo is that of contrast. Contrasting attitudes and facial expressions of the mother and son, contrasting clothes, and contrasting ideas of what a church traditionally looks like vs. what we see in this picture.
I'm holding onto my dream of being a cinematographer. I believe that the very act of creating a film preserves moments in time. It's like my mantra: Pain is temporary, but film is forever.

I like what you're holding onto, your dream of becoming a cinematographer. I also liked the picture of the serpent handler especially because in the picture they were holding the serpents they had captured.
