Journal Six By Nick Looker

My favorite photo by Harvey Wang in Holding On is the photo of George Preston and his old gas station. George Preston bought this gas station just for a small payment of a hundred dollars. The filling station in the photo looks like an old run down garage some would say. It was built in 1912 and doesn't look like much work has been put into it to repair the station since. If you look close in the the picture George Preston's hat depicts "George Preston's Museum, Belle Plaine Iowa". This is more of a museum for many travelers than a filling station. It is a unique building with many old marketing signs on the outside of the building. Since located on Highway 30 the building has many signs and collectable memorabilia that fill the inside and outside of the garage type building. Depicted at the top right corner of the building there may be a sign saying "Customer Service ONLY" but this filling station is much more than a filling station. People may just stop by to check out how unique and old fashion Preston has made the building.

If I was to be holding on to something that has happen in my life so far, I would say I would be holding on to my high school football career. I played running back for Wynford H.S and I made memories that I will never forget. I started running back from my sophomore year to my senior year. I  will always remember the friendships I made with the classes that graduated above me and the classes that graduated after me. I was a 1000 yard rusher my junior and senior year. I made first team offense and defense my junior and senior year and I was the first to do that in Wynford history. Playing in three straight playoff years and making it to the regional finals was one of my greatest accomplishments. I will forever hold on to my experiences and memories with my friends, coaches and family while playing football.

  1. I too will always hold on to the sports and memories I made in high school! I think that is something great to hold on too, the leadership and friends you make in sports will last forever.

  2. I also hold on to my middle school baseball when I use to catch the ball without baseball gloves.

  3. Holding on to sports memories is something that I believe is so important because of the ties and relationships you build during that time. Just like you said, you made friendships and made experiences and memories that'll last you a lifetime and that is something you just definitely proudly hold on to.
