I think in many ways it shows a man who appears helpless and tired. I think this is very evident by looking closely at his eyes. Behind him the light is shining into a darker room, which could be used to foreshadow the ending of the profile (Bickham being released from prison). The props in the shot are mainly the cots that prisoners sleep on. I think this shot was used to help show how prison is meant to force people into conformity and uniformity.
What are you holding onto? What do you want to preserve and believe needs preserving or respect? The editors told us they are holding onto a belief in dignity and creativity in our culture, against all odds. The persons profiled each expressed a tradition, skill, lifestyle, habit, passion, or belief that each found vital. Now its your turn to think about something that you value, and share that.
I feel in many ways I'm holding onto the belief that people don't have to be locked into the social/monetary class they were born in. If that belief was to fall through everything I've planned to or have done up to this point was for nothing. If a person is meant to be poor regardless of how hard they try to surpass it, then the need for so many things becomes obsolete. For example, many people consider education to be the great bridge between the poor and middle class. However, if this isn't true then all of the time I've invested to get to this point is for nothing.

Jarrod, it's fantastic to see the picture of your family and what you strive for. You are holding onto the basic egalitarian framework of the American Dream with the belief that one can have upward mobility and opportunity. I also wish and hope for a society that tries to solve the huge gap between the rich and the poor and provide opportunities for all. Thanks for your posts and insights always.
